Polynucleotides vs filler: what they actually do
A consultation-led guide to polynucleotides versus hyaluronic-acid filler: mechanism, what they cannot do, under-eye questions, and how Aesthetics by KK plans skin-quality treatments.

Polynucleotides and dermal filler are not interchangeable. Filler adds or refines volume in selected areas. Polynucleotides are used as a regenerative, skin-quality injectable. They do not build cheeks, lips, or a jawline the way filler does.

Why this comparison is everywhere
UK clinics have moved polynucleotides from niche to menu staple. Patients often arrive with two mixed ideas:
- I want glow and texture, not a different face.
- I have been told filler is “over” and this is the replacement.
The first is a reasonable brief. The second is usually too blunt. Many people still need volume, structure, or neither. Some need repair first, then a small amount of filler later. Some need energy-based tightening instead.

What polynucleotides are (plain English)
Polynucleotide products used in aesthetics are injectable preparations of purified DNA fragments, often sourced from fish milt (you will see “salmon DNA” in headlines). Marketing language runs ahead of what a single visit can do.
What a consultation-led conversation should cover:
- They are not hyaluronic-acid filler.
- They are not a guaranteed collagen “reset”.
- They are still medical injectables: infection, lumps, bruising, and product-specific reactions belong in consent.
- Vascular occlusion risk is discussed differently than for HA filler, but “safer than filler” is not a licence to skip assessment.

What filler is for
Hyaluronic-acid filler is for volume, support, and shape when anatomy and goals match. It can look natural when the plan is conservative. It can look overdone when it is used to fake tightness that the skin no longer has.

Under eyes: do not pick from a reel
Thin under-eye skin is a common polynucleotide search. It is also a high-consequence zone for filler. Hollows, pigment, bags, and crepey texture are different problems.

- Polynucleotides are sometimes discussed for skin quality, not as a bag-removing treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Are polynucleotides the same as Profhilo or “skin boosters”?
No. Skin boosters are usually hyaluronic-acid hydration treatments. Profhilo-style products are a different HA category again. Polynucleotides are a regenerative class. Clinics sometimes combine them. We explain mechanism in the room, not as a brand war. Skin boosters covers the hydration side.
How many sessions?
Often more than one, spaced weeks apart. Your clinician should say why, and when you will review.
Can they replace anti-wrinkle injections?
No. Movement lines are a muscle problem when toxin is appropriate. See anti-wrinkle injections.
